Are we hurting kids with too much protection?

August 31, 2013
Can we let them fall?

Can we let them fall?

Tim Elmore has done it again.  At his blog, Growing Leaders, Elmore shares advice and insights about parenting, teaching, and the challenges of raising children in today’s world.

In his latest post Elmore warns us that all the steps we take to protect and praise our children can actually backfire.  He writes:

“While I applaud the engagement of this generation of parents and teachers, it’s important to recognize the unintended consequences of our engagement. We want the best for our students, but research now shows that our “over-protection, over-connection” style has damaged them. Let me suggest three huge mistakes we’ve made leading this generation of kids and how we must correct them.”

Elmore goes on to list three big mistakes we make as parents — mainly not providing opportunities for our children to fail and overpraising them along the way.  And he calls on the research of Dr. Carol Dweck — a name familiar to Cannon School parents — to help parents and teachers get back on track. (The Cannon School community read Dweck’s book Mindset a couple years ago.)

Cannon School is a JrK-Grade 12 independent school located in Concord, NC
