Parenting in Uncertainty with Rob Evans

November 12, 2012

From a recent e-mail communication to the Cannon School community:

At the inaugural presentation of the Maria DeHaas Lecture Series on November 1,  Rob Evans provided valuable insight into the challenges parents face on a daily basis.

If you were unable to attend the presentation, or if you would like to revisit some of Dr. Evans’ key points, please use this link to access a recording of the lecture.

Key Takeaways from Dr. Evans:

  1. Stop reading parenting books for a while.
  2. Make a list of what you are good at and try to do a little more of one.
  3. Children are mostly resilient, mostly.
  4. Children learn from your example; you can’t raise them in a way that is at odds with who you are and how you live.
  5. Little bits of nurturing, little bits of Mr. Rogers, little bits of unproductive time help as children get older and start to focus more on the trying and not just the outscoring.
  6. Remember that it is good to hold the line about the really big stuff and let them get glad again.
  7. It is great not to do for them what they can do for themselves and not to race to fix things before they have had a chance to see if they can do a little problem-solving or learning.

The Maria DeHaas Lecture Series is made possible by DeHaas family and friends and the generous donations made to the Maria DeHaas Endowed Fund. To support this fund, please visit www.cannonschool.org/support.
